Knock

Story by Glen

Mal checked outside the door once again.

Nothing. The grass and brush were dead and the trees, if not dead, were dying. The bird carcass was still there, untouched.

He shut the door and relocked it, setting the chain, too.

It seemed like only minutes after he sat down in the comfy chair that it happened again.

The knob rattled and tried to turn.

Mal did not stir. Instead, he muttered, “I thought that there was nothing left alive out there . . .”

The rattling stopped. An equally soft voice replied, “If it helps any, you are right.”

The author of Knock is a long-term Fears’erer, Glen of Ask-De-Writer over on Tumblr. Cheers for the spookems man!

It’s three weeks late posting because I’m an idiot. I scheduled it for the wrong month and didn’t notice until Glen prompted me. Doh. Sorry, man.

Cheers to Kathy & Warren for the continued $10 Patronage. You can find me on Ko Fi, Patreon, Etsy, Amazon, Skillshare and Threadless.

  1. This can go one of two ways:
The source of the voice might be a harmful entity that wanted to inflict the same death on anybody on the inside of the house.
Or it could be someone who needed help and Mal has lost his chance to help them. A second carcass might be waiting on his doorstep.

      1. In any case, he’s still alive. If the scenario is the former, let him keep on being alive. If it’s the latter, let him give a respectful burial to the individual who spoke, but did not call for help when they could have.

  2. Brilliant. The drawing style reminds of a book by Astrid Lindgren I had as a kid in Moscow. Still have it actually. It was a book called ‘Karlsson Who Lives on The Roof.” About a wee man with a propeller on his ass. Was read to my father by the grandmother who also raised me. Fond memories those.

      1. Ug. The like star was giving me grief. But I think I got it. I just searched for ‘When the Wind Blows’ and it is sort of similar. I guess all that was sixties-ish drawing? In any case I like it. Thanks.
