Electric Loss

Brass Ep. 67

The car sputtered. Iron tapped the fuel gauge. They’d filled the tank from jerry cans less than a hundred mile back and the tank was still showing full. The lights inside and out of the car started flickering.

Copper looked out of the back window. The black-bird still visible on its dune, still watching.

The radio turned on and off. Delivering sporadic bursts of white noise. As the last of the electrical charge dissipated from the car, Copper sighed. It was like being in Britain during the seventies.

I’d say for that story I need an electric segue but all I have is an analogue Etsy.

Dune Bird

Brass Ep. 66

Iron narrowed her eyes. “I see it,” said Copper. “Keep driving.”

Sitting on a dune, far away from the road, sat the black creature. Its piercing eyes surrounded by black feathers. Coppers original belief confirmed as it spread its wings.

Copper reached across to Iron, resting her hand on Irons’ shoulder.

“That bird,” pondered Copper, “looks a right chirp off the old block.”

Did that story get you in a flap? Well, one thing that won’t make you flap is the free delivery of Little Fears art prints on our Etsy store.

Bot Chipped

Brass Ep. 65

They’d seen nothing but sand for seven hours. So, when Iron spotted a shine of metal up ahead she slowed down for a look.

They stopped next to the object and Copper leaned out of the window. A wrecked robot laid on the sand with its legs dipping beneath the surface. It looked like it had been attacked with at least fifty computer CPUs. “That’s a death that would have megahertz,” observed Copper.

Iron chuckled and Copper sighed. A clunk into first gear and they continued West.

Do you want to know what wouldn’t megahertz? A t-shirt being thrown at you. The great thing is, we’ve got a Threadless store filled with t-shirts, tanks and hoodies! None of which would ever-hertz!

Memory Fades

Brass Ep. 64

Copper starred out of the window. The dunes getting fewer and further between. Flat sand in every direction. The road had started to disappear now too. Iron knew to keep heading West. If the road disappeared, she’d drive to Brass as the crow flies.

“I don’t remember how I got to my cabin,” sighed Copper. “I remember odds and ends of my life before. I remember apples. But everything else is just ambiguous and frustrating. Like being on a Ryan-Air flight.”

Hey, want to know something that doesn’t fade? The ink on my art prints.

Useless Paper

Brass Ep. 63

Copper unfolded the map, wondering how much further the journey was. She sighed and turned the map so Iron could see it. Iron glanced across and saw an almost blank map. Just one road running north to south. No markings, no sign of Brass and no map keys. Just a blank sheet with a single road, going nowhere.

Copper folded the map up and tossed it onto the back seat. The only piece of paper less useful than that map was Theresa May’s Brexit plan.

Hah! Boom! Take that to the face, May!

Etsy thingy, for sellers (and buyers). I noticed yesterday, that free delivery on all items with free delivery now has a noticeable ‘free delivery’ highlighted with green under each item. Awesome.

I hadn’t noticed that before. Not sure when it appeared. Also, hey, look a that. Every print on my Etsy store, does indeed, have free delivery!

Cow Dance

Brass Ep. 62

Eventually, they left the dead forest and the flat sands with odd dunes returned. Copper recalled when this area was all farmland.

Iron titled her head, listening to the faint sound of Rolling Stones music. “There used to be dancing cow here,” remarked Copper. “It would spend its days grooving to Paint it Black and Gimme Shelter. The music was then adapted into a series of cow noises.”

Iron nodded in appreciation of the moos like Jagger.

Sea Pie

Brass Ep. 61

They climbed back into the car and continued their journey. Iron noticed the seats were smaller and closer to the steering wheel. Copper sunk into her seat when she noticed the car had shifted from left-hand drive to right-hand drive. The duo looked to each other in silent acknowledgement.

With the turn of a makeshift key Iron continued driving while Copper rummaged through the glove box. She pulled out a leaflet with a skull and crossbones logo on the top. ‘Sea Sick Sams meal deals’ read the top of the leaflet. ‘Chicken pie, £12; vegetable pie, £9; beef pie, £15.’

Copper lamented the high prices and grumbled to herself, “ruddy pie-rates.”

Lemon Cat

Brass Ep. 60

Copper noticed some dried fruit half buried in the sands. She reached down and picked up what may have once been a lemon.

She’d never been keen on these yellow fruits. She’d heard a story about a cat that’d climbed a lemon tree. It fell out, hitting its nose on every branch on the way down. It took enough knocks to the face to give it a permanent angry scowl.

Apparently, it was a right sour puss.

Wood Bank

Brass Ep. 59

Another few hundred miles and they found themselves in what was left of a forest. Most of the trees had sunk into deep into the sand. Even those that hadn’t, had lost all their leaves.

Iron nudged Copper and pointed out a cabin just off the road. They pulled up for a look and could see it had a banks décor inside. Tellers windows and a large vault door set further back.

Copper reached out of the car door and picked up a sign that read ‘Old Forest Bank’. “What a strange place for a new branch,” pondered Copper.

Double-Puns

Looking at my calendar and having a ponder on my desire to move onto new projects (ref, online serialized fiction). I think I’m going to post the last thirty’ish tales, two per day.

Not only am I eager to move onto new projects, but the serial has also become more of a continuous story. It makes a bit more sense to bunch it up when I’m asking people to come back continuously for each new episode. I’m neither Netflix or a TV station. Dragging the story out now is more frustrating than engaging.

The bonus to you, my good ladies, fellows and others, is that you get double the groaners every single day. Heck, Saturday and Sunday you’ll be getting three stories a day as I’m still collaborating and doing the Colour Collective portraits.

Double bonus to anyone who buys me a cuppa this next two weeks on Ko-Fi. I always give cuppa buyers a shout out with a link to their own site in the next days’ posts. So for the next two weeks, you’ll get at least two shout outs the following day.

I hope you still enjoy Copper and Irons journey.

Cheers, gang!
