Red Moth

“You’ve got to help me!” whimpered Red.

“What’s wrong?” gasped Serpent.

“I think I’m a moth!” squeaked Red.

“Why would you run into a theatre to tell us that?” asked Sprite. “You should have gone to a doctor.”

“I know,” cried Red. “I just saw a light on…”

The fear of butterflies and moths is called lepidopterophobia. I wonder what the general squawking and flapping of arms is called when a big moth enters the room and blats about. Moth-dance?

Tomorrow, we pun

Tomorrow, we pun again. It didn’t quite feel right posting puns immediately after yesterdays retrospective on Brass, age-related memory changes and dementia.

Copper and Iron will return in future stories. I haven’t written them into any more tales yet. It wouldn’t be right to forget the duo when the focus of their story was on remembering lost loved ones.

For anyone that’s subscribed to my website, I’ll be reworking my front page this week. I’ll be adding posts linking to each complete series. There’ll be a single post for each of the 7 series so far. I haven’t figured out a way to publish a post without it going to all subscribers yet. I shall Google before I do. Sorry in advance if you get a few posts in a day linking to older stories.

In the mean tie, if you love what I do, and fancy supporting me in some way, you can buy me a cuppa on Ko-Fi. Nobble one of my tees on Threadless. Buy one of my books on Amazon. Grab an original art or a print on my Etsy. Or, hit me up on Patreon for as little as $1 a month.

Jellyfish’ed

Wobbly and ambiguous. I’d say that describes the Brass story. It’s a story that would suffer from over-explanation or specifics.

I’ve witnessed three people losing themselves in their final days. It’s hard on everyone. Not remembering a 16-week long hospital visit or asking when we hung a painting that’s lived on the same wall in their house for 30+ years. Picking them up when they’ve gotten lost in the 1/2 mile long high street they’ve lived next to their entire lives. Sitting in the back seat of our Volvo and asking why there’s no steering wheel in the car.

I do firmly believe, sometimes the best we can do is keep everyone laughing. Laughter is often all that keeps us going in our darkest hours. It’s a coping mechanism with no equal. When our loved ones do finally pass on, remember the best of them. Keep their ideas, hopes and dreams alive just that little bit longer.

Also, keep telling their favourite jokes. I’ve told you about my mate Sid, right? He was the victim of ID theft. He’s now just called S.

If you’re supporting someone, or know anyone, suffering from age-related memory changes or dementia, there are good charities out there who can help.

Saved

Story by Aimer

A bump in the night,
It’s nothing, right?
Wind at the window,
Gusts at the door.
Shadows in the bedroom,
Were they there before?

An old farm house,
Creaking wood floors.
A musty bed
In an unused room.
A storm, mad rain,
Go to sleep, again.

A crucifix on the wall,
Across from the bed.
A voice in the dark,
A whisper in his head.
Have you been saved?
The shadows said.

Thorns on his head,
Blood on his ribs.
The pale figure moved,
First hands, then feet.
Stepped off the wood cross,
Floated down from the wall.

Sheets on the floor,
Feet on the stairs.
Heart pounding,
Door slamming.
Rain on his face,
He shouted back at the house.

Thanks, but I saved myself!

This week’s spooky Sunday collaboration was written by a regular in comments, Aimer of Aimer Boyz. Author, poet, odd-bod. Cheers for the spookies, Aimer!

Live on, laugh on

Brass Ep. 84

“Do you think I’m going to keep losing memories?” asked Copper.

“I have no idea, I’m afraid,” replied Yuffie. “On the bright side. You’ll be able to enjoy the same jokes more than once.”

“The illustrator knows something about that,” remarked Fuen.

Yuffie snorted. “What’s the earliest memory you have?”

“Apples,” said Copper. “I liked apples…”

Shored Up

Brass Ep. 83

“Where are you taking us?” asked Copper, as Yuffie led them up the dock.

“To as many artists, illustrators, writers and bloggers as we can find,” replied Yuffie. “They’re good at keeping dreams alive.”

“What if they don’t want to help?” asked Copper.

“I’ll publish their web browsers history on their blogs,” replied Yuffie.

Village Idiots

Brass Ep. 82

They pulled up onto the beach, Yuffie was waiting for them with a boat on the shore. “This road once had hamlets everywhere,” said Copper, “each had a village idiot.”

“Yeah, I think they all ended up in Westminster,” pondered Fuen.

The trio stepped out of the car, looking back across the sands. “Our homes decayed quicker than a nineties Skoda joke,” sighed Copper.

“Let’s try and make sure the same doesn’t happen to you too,” replied Fuen.

Interpret Hope

Brass Ep. 81

“I should tell you,” said Fuen. “As creations of the living, how we carry on past the expiration of our creators, differs for everyone. Yuffie showed Hydra to a bunch of artists to keep his memory alive. He grew from three foot tall to twelve foot tall. It’s all about how the living interprets and remember the ideas, hopes and dreams of the dead.”

“Like critics looking for meaning in a hundred year old painting,” pondered Copper. “When sometimes, the artist just wanted to paint a boat.”

“Exactly,” remarked Fuen. “However we’re interpreted, good ideas are worth keeping alive, aye?”

Last Hopes

Brass Ep. 80

“If we’re just thoughts, perhaps should decay with this island,” mused Copper.

“What if you’re a hope? A dream? A movement?” replied Fuen.

“So we could be anything a human can dream up?” asked Copper. “Including thoughts of envy, jealousy and hate.”

“You could also be the last thoughts of a good but broken human,” pointed out Fuen. “That’s why you should keep telling jokes.”
